SHOTOKAN KARATE-DO

Shotokan karate is one of the most widely practiced styles of karate in the world today. The style was founded by the Okinawan master Gichin Funakoshi, and was a combination of the techniques he was taught from the two masters he studied with.

Funakoshi brought the style to Japan early last centaury and his senior Japanese students helped in developing it into the dynamic martial art it is today. The Japanese organised the Shotokan style and developed instructor-training programmes, which had the goal of sending Japanese teachers abroad to spread the word of karate.

JUDO

Judo is a Japanese martial art that developed from the older art of Ju Jutsu. It was devised by the Japanese master Dr Jigoro Kano (pictured below)

The word Judo means “the gentle way”. This is not mean to mean soft but compliant. The image used to describe what is meant here is of the oak tree being blown over by the strong winds but the pliable bamboo bends and then returns to it’s normal shape, giving and going with the force of the wind .

Judo is essentially a form of Japanese wrestling where practitioners try to throw, hold, arm lock, strangle and choke each other. Judo has even grown into an Olympic sport but Kano devised the art as a means of character development for participants with effective goshin jutsu (self defence techniques) and these have been lost by a lot of sports only practitioners.
