Thanks so much to everyone who supported Christian Aid week in any way especially those who attended the meal which was our main fund raiser this year. Overall we raised £600 which will help the charity buy two beds for in hospital for people like Jebbah.
Christian Aid Week: ‘All mums should live’
Sierra Leone is the world’s most dangerous place to become a mum.
Every day 10 women die from giving birth. In Sawula district, the community
struggle with a clinic which has no electricity and only two delivery beds.
Jebbeh is heavily pregnant but as her baby grows, it’s not joy that fills her heart,
but fear. When Jebbeh’s sister Fatmata went in to labour, there were so few ambulances that Fatmata had no choice but to walk for three hours under the baking sun, to the nearest hospital. The journey was long and with every step Fatmata struggled to keep walking.
Jebbeh told us: ‘My sister was crying out with hunger. She died on the side of the road. She never gave birth.’
This Christian Aid Week, together, we helped make childbirth safe for mums and babies. Through our gifts and prayers, we can help give the world’s poorest mums a chance to live.
The photo is of Tennah another Mum in Sierra Leone and her baby. They were helped by Christian Aid.

New opportunities for Children at St Helens
From 8th July all young children in church will be invited to leave the church , with an adult if necessary , after the first hymn and go to the church hall where there will be stories and very simple activities. The children will return for the peace and will sit in the choir stalls for the communion so they can see what’s happening. This is being organised by Henry Brandon and we are grateful for those people who have volunteered to spend time with the children on a rota basis.
A Church Toddler group has been set up for all preschool children in the
community but especially children who have been baptised at
St Helens. Families will stay with their children who will have the chance to play and meet each other. This group will run every Friday from 1pm to 3pm.
Bensham Food Co-op would be very grateful for donatons of cereal and rice. These may be left at the back of Church on Wednesday or Friday 9.00 - 4.30, when the church is open.
On Saturday June 29th, Revd Alex Crawford was ordained to the Priesthood in Durham Cathedral. On Sunday, he celebrated the Eucharist for the first time.
